Malbech

THE BUNCH

The bunch is branched, medium to large, fairly compact and pyramid-shaped with medium-sized round berries of varying diameter.
The blue-black skin is very waxy and thin yet at the same time tough.
The pulp is rather soft and colourless but  succulent and  very sugary.

BRIEF HISTORY

A varietal from the French area of Gironde, it is also cultivated in the Loire Valley.
The Malbech grape arrived in Italy in the mid-1800s, but the first confirmed date is 1881 when Malbech was shown at the ampelographic exhibition in Pinerolo. Malbech is currently cultivated in the Veneto and Friuli regions and only marginally in other Italian regions.
It is firmly entrenched in the Motta area where it is grown with pride, also because it seems that this vine has found its ideal habitat in that area.
Its presence in this area can certainly be tied to historical events connected with the end of the First World War and which account for the presence of French vines in this area (see the Chardonnay description).
